How To Get Your Student Loan
Full-Time Students
Step 1: Review the document
- Review your Certificate of Eligibility and Canada Student Loan Agreement (Certificate/Student Loan Agreement) to ensure it is accurate and that you understand the Terms and Conditions associated with your Canada Student Loan.
- The cashing of your loan (and Canada Access Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities or Canada Access Grant for Students from Low-Income Families, if applicable) will be delayed if the form is not completed correctly. If you make any change to the form after you have completed it, please initial the change (for example, your e-mail address or phone number).
- No changes can be made to SIN, Date of Birth, or the information in Section 2. If this information is not correct, please contact your Provincial/Territorial Student Assistance Office.
- If your program of study or Educational Institution listed on your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement has changed, or if you enrol for only part of the program noted on this form, you must not cash your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement, but return it to the Provincial/Territorial Student Assistance Office for reassessment.
Step 2: Have your school sign the document
Important: If your enrolment has been confirmed electronically by your school, Section 3 on your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement will already be completed. If this is the case and you are in agreement with the amount directed to your school, proceed to Step 3. Otherwise:
- Take all copies of your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement to your school.
- You may be required by your school to pay a portion of your loan and grant, if applicable, directly to the school. If this is the case, your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement can be used to direct the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) to pay a portion or your entire loan and grant, if applicable, directly to your school.
- Have your school complete and sign Section 3 - Educational Institution. Your school will retain copy 3 of the document.
- If your enrolment was confirmed electronically and you do not agree with the amount to be directed to your school, take all copies of this document to your school. You and your school must initial a change to the amount.
Important Deadline: The Certificate/Student Loan Agreement is valid for only 30 days from the date it is signed by your school and no later than the end of the month shown as the “Period of Study End Date.” If 30 days have passed since your school signed, it will be returned to you and you will be required to reconfirm your enrolment. You will then have to resubmit your form (as noted in Step 5).
Step 3: Include your banking information
- To have your funds deposited directly to your bank account, complete the Electronic Funds Transfer section and attach a personalized voided cheque. If you do not have a chequing account, you or your Financial Institution can complete this section.
- If you do not complete this section, a cheque will be mailed to you at the mailing address indicated in Section 1 of your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement.
Step 4: Review and sign the document
- Ensure that all the required information has been entered correctly and that all sections have been completed.
- Sign and date your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement. By signing the form, you agree to all of the terms and conditions of your loans, including those on the reverse side of your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement.
Step 5: Bring your document to a designated Canada Post outlet or NSLSC kiosk
- Bring your completed document to a designated Canada Post outlet or an on-campus NSLSC kiosk. Contact the NSLSC if a designated Canada Post outlet is not accessible to you.
- For more information on finding a designated Canada Post outlet or on how to complete this form, call the NSLSC at 1-888-815-4514.
Important: You will be required to show your Social Insurance Number card (or any other official Government of Canada document that indicates your Social Insurance Number) and any valid photo identification issued in Canada by the federal government or a provincial or territorial government (driver’s license, health insurance card, passport or citizenship card).
- Once the information on the form is validated, Copy 1 of the completed document will be forwarded to the NSLSC for processing; the remaining copies will be returned to you.
- If you are studying outside of Canada, follow the same five steps as above, but mail your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement to the NSLSC at the address indicated on your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the NSLSC.
- If you are mailing your documents to the NSLSC, you must include a photocopy of two pieces of identification.
Step 6: Keep your other loans up to date
- Any Canada Student Loans you received prior to August 1, 2000, would have been cashed through a financial institution. To ensure that you do not have to begin repaying any loans, you must inform your previous financial institution(s) that you are continuing in full-time studies.
- Send copy 22A to the financial institution holding your previous Canada Student Loans.
Step 7: Keep your student loan file up to date
- Retain copy 2 of your Certificate/Student Loan Agreement for your records.
Important: On the last day of the seventh month after you have completed your studies, you will be required to begin repaying your loans. As long as you advise the NSLSC and your Financial Institution of your ongoing in-study status by providing the necessary documentation, you will not have to make payments on your loans.
