Interest/Interest-free Status
While you are in school, the Government of Canada pays the interest on your federal student loan as long as you provide the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) with confirmation of your enrolment.
If you switch from full-time to part-time studies, your loan for full-time studies enters repayment status; interest will begin to accumulate, but payments will not begin for six months.
If you get a loan for part-time studies, interest will not accumulate on that loan while you are in school.
If you have loans issued prior to August 1, 2000, you must advise the appropriate loan holder (your bank and/or the NSLSC).
