Getting your student loan back on track is easier than you think. If you have missed payments on your student loan for more than 270 days and your loan is now in collection, you can get help. Canada Student Loan rehabilitation is your opportunity to bring your loan back into good standing.

What you need to know about Canada Student Loan rehabilitation

Canada Student Loan rehabilitation is an opportunity to bring the federal portion of your student loan out of collection so that you can once again access student financial assistance, including loans and grants, interest-free status and repayment assistance.

Canada Student Loan rehabilitation can help you with the federal portion of your loan. To help you bring your provincial or territorial loan into good standing, contact your loan provider in yourprovince or territory of permanent residence.

How to rehabilitate your Canada Student Loan

  • Contact: The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is responsible for determining your monthly repayment schedule. The CRA can confirm the exact amount you will have to repay and provide repayment options. The repayment amount will include the outstanding interest on your Canada Student Loan account plus the equivalent of two monthly payments. After you contact CRA, call the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)and ask to speak with a Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP) officer. The officer can determine the status of your Canada Student Loan and discuss your rehabilitation options.
  • Request restriction be removed: If your access to additional financial assistance has been restricted because of your loan status, you can ask that this restriction be removed. Once your student loan account is in good standing, write a letter to the CSLP indicating that you have made the required payments to the Canada Revenue Agency. Include your name, Social Insurance Number (SIN) and full mailing address. The CSLP will verify your payment records with the CRA and send you a letter confirming the status of your loan.
  • Stay up-to-date: Until you receive a letter from the CSLP indicating that the restriction on your loan has been removed, it is important to make all of the payments according to the monthly repayment schedule set up by the CRA. Once the restriction is removed, the loan will be returned to the National Student Loans Service Centre and regular in-study or repayment conditions will apply.
  • Follow-up: If you have not received a letter from the CSLP within 20 business days, contact the NSLSC and ask to speak with a CSLP officer about your loan rehabilitation.

Additional notes about Canada Student Loan rehabilitation
